Policies for STAT and OPER
Overrides
Requests for overrides into all STAT (statistics)
and OPER (operations research) courses must be made in person by
completing and submitting an override request form in accordance with the department's request procedure (see below). These forms
can be found on the wall outside of Oliver Hall Room 2052. Please
complete the correct form for the course you desire. Once completed,
please place the form into the pink "Completed Override Requests"
folder, and your request will be reviewed as described in the department's request procedure (see below). Forms must be completed
correctly and completely--forms without the requested information
will not be considered.
Procedure to Request STAT or OPER Overrides
Fall 2008
If you wish to be added to a STAT or OPER course for the fall 2008 semester, please read and follow the procedures below. [If you are requesting an override for a MATH course, please see Ms. Marlene Kustesky in Oliver 3013 (Math Lab).]
Fall classes start on Thursday, August 21, 2008. Requests for overrides for STAT and OPER courses will initially be reviewed and processed on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. Students receiving overrides will be granted electronic overrides, implying you will be able to register for the class as usual through e-services. It is your responsibility to make sure you have no holds or scheduling conflicts that would prevent you from registering. Overrides granted on August 19 will only be good for a few days. Please check your VCU email account on August 19 and August 20 to see if you have received an override and when the override expires. If you receive an override it is your responsibility to be prompt in using it. After a few days, unused overrides will be deleted and the seats offered to other students who are waiting. Students hoping to be added to classes may attend during the add/drop period (August 21 – 27) but doing so does not guarantee that you will receive an override. When the add/drop period ends on August 27, if you are not registered in the class you must stop attending.
- Obtain an override request form for the appropriate class (STAT 208, STAT 210, or other course). Forms are located on the wall outside Oliver 2054.
- Fill out the form completely with accurate information. You must include your name, your student number (which is your VID number), and your VCU email address. Incomplete forms will be destroyed, so if you do not know your VID number or the sections that you can take, please take the form with you and return once you have obtained all the required information.
- STAT 208 sections are capped at 20 students, STAT 210 sections are capped at 150 students. The more sections that you list, the better your chances of receiving an override. The number of students in other classes will depend on the number of seats in the classroom and the maximum number of students that the instructor can comfortably teach using his or her planned teaching method.
- Students receiving overrides will be notified using their VCU email accounts. The electronic overrides will allow students to register as usual using e-services, and hence requires that a student has no holds or other scheduling conflicts. Electronic overrides will only be valid for a few days, so please be prompt in checking your VCU email and using the electronic override if one is received. If you do not receive an email, then unfortunately you did not receive an override.
- Please do not contact the department regarding the status of the override. As many requests as possible will be granted, on the dates listed above. Inquiries regarding the status of the override will lower your chances to be added to the class you requested. If there is information that you feel Dr. Mays needs to know, include that information on the form.
Every effort will be made between August 19, 2008 and August 27, 2008 to get as many people into the classes as possible!
